Parallax

How a small shift in position can change what we see.

From Greek parallaxis, meaning “alteration,” parallax describes the apparent shift in an object’s position against a more distant background when viewed from two different vantage points.

Hold up a finger and look at it first with one eye, then the other. Your finger seems to jump, though it has not moved at all. Astronomers use this same principle to measure the distances to nearby stars, gauging immense stretches of space from the slightest change in apparent position.

There is something quietly instructive in this. The object remains the same, but our position changes what becomes visible. What once seemed fixed can appear differently when we move, even slightly.

We know this in our lives as well. A disagreement softens. A memory takes on new meaning. What felt immovable reveals another side.
